1. How much space is needed?

We need a parking space for the van and any dry, quiet and relatively clean area on the site. We have presented in canteens, offices, training rooms, and the middle of the site.

2. What facilities do we need?

All we require is a 240 volt power source.

3. What do we bring?

  • Full presentation equipment, stools and tables
  • Tea, coffee, cold water, Coke and Sprite
  • Hot toasties and biscuits
  • Mugs, plates and napkins

4. What do we do?

We run three separate sessions (see below for timing details) introducing environmental issues relevant to the construction industry. Subjects that are covered include:

  • What is sustainable construction
  • Types of construction waste
  • How to reduce and manage waste
  • Site Waste Management Plans
  • Carbon balance
  • Changing environmental legislation.

Our central message is that good environmental management saves money, keeps you on the right side of the law, and can win you business.

Our key aim is to help reduce the amount of waste produced by the Construction Industry by promoting more efficient use of resources through greater knowledge and understanding.

5. How many should attend?

We take up to twelve people per session and would not want to present to less than five. We can run more sessions on larger sites.

6. Who should attend?

We present to site workers and management and particularly enjoy sessions with both present. Attendees can be employed or self employed and main contractor or subcontractor.

The group can be made up of any trades, or just one trade. There are environmental issues that are specific to certain trades, and we make sure this is recognised in our presentation.

7. What preparations should they make?

None at all, attendees should just come as they are. As they will be consuming food they should have had an opportunity to wash before arrival at a session.

8. How many presentations do we do?

To complete our program employees or subcontractors must attend three sessions, and these can be spread over one, two or three days. We can fit in with the particular requirements of your site and work program. If there are sufficient numbers on site we can run the same session more than once.

9. How long does a session last?

The presentations are timed to last half and hour. We relate issues to your particular site which can lead to specific queries and discussion which can continue for longer.

10. What time are the sessions?

The idea of the Cafe Van is to minimise the disruption to your site. We can present at any time of day, but we would suggest presentations be made at 10.00, 1.00, 3.30 or 5.00. We can arrange evening presentations.

11. When do we arrive?

We arrive at least an hour before the presentation to familiarise ourselves with the site and site personnel.

12. What paper work is required?

We try to keep paperwork to a minimum. The person placing an order for the Cafe Van will need to:

  • Fill in a company enrolment form
  • A site information form

Each attendee will have to:

  • Fill in an enrolment form
  • Complete a brief questionnaire at the start of the first and at the end of the last session
  • Sign an attendance register

13. What language do we use?

We have presented to a wide range of nationalities but use English as our main language.

14. Is this an exam?

Absolutely not! Our aim is to raise awareness by presenting the environmental agenda in a relaxed and informal way. There are no tests, no grades and no assessment. The three sessions are designed to allow new ideas to be absorbed, questioned and affirmed. We ask that a positive commitment is made to attend the three sessions, and this is the only condition for the awarding of the environmental awareness certificate.

15. What are Environmental Awareness Certificates?

The Environmental Awareness Certificates recognise the commitment of those who have attended the Cafe Van presentations. Each attendee, on completion of three sessions will be awarded a personal Certificate. These will be delivered to site, sent to head office or sent to the individuals as is most appropriate.

18. Do you have any particular environmental issues you would like covered?

19. Follow up

We would like to help you improve and develop your environmental performance. The Cafe Van is only a first step. We offer follow up in a number of ways:

  1. We will keep in touch with you and your site on an informal basis to see how things are going.
  2. We are able to answer any general queries you may have after we have left either over the phone or by email
  3. If you would like a more structured environmental development program we would be pleased to help you develop this and take it forward.

22. Health and Safety

We have carried out a full risk assessment for a Cafe Van visit which can be supplied and attached to your site file.

Our presenters are familiar with building sites and the hazards they present. We will familiarise ourselves with the site and your health and safety requirements on arrival. We bring hard hats and high visibility jackets, and will wear these and safety footwear on your site unless otherwise instructed.
